Disney has realized that there is not a strong portfolio for virtual reality games so far and it sensed a gap in this area. So this launch is a step in this direction to fill the gap, at least, in its own properties. It has put its own VR app on steam. It includes all of its titles such as Star Wars, The Avengers and The Jungle Book. The best part is that, it’s free and compatible with both the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift.
The idea behind launching an app of wildly popular computer software distribution platform Steam is to provide a more cohesive VR experience. The official statement writes:
“Transport yourself into the wonderful world of Disney from your very own living room with Disney Movies VR. This app is a fully-immersive experience where you visit themed worlds, including Disney, Marvel and Lucasfilm, and interact with some of your favorite characters in their natural environments. Choose from multiple scenes in Disney movies including The Jungle Book, Captain America and Star Wars.”
Though, app contains fully immersive scenes taken from films, it provides a new way to getting personal with new films. The reaction, however, is not very encouraging. People are deriding it for having a shallow content.
The new VR experience Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine, “a cinematic virtual reality experiment,” is not available in this app, but it will be launched soon on HTC Vive platform.
